About the Project
AutoBorder aims to develop a next-generation drive-through border control system that enables fast, seamless, and secure identity verification for travellers in vehicles. By combining biometric identification, digital travel credentials, advanced risk assessment, and in-vehicle sensors, the system will greatly reduce waiting time while maintaining security standards at EU external borders.
Concept
Border control processes for land and maritime crossings are often slow and less efficient than they need to be, particularly for frequent commercial vehicles (trucks, coaches, etc.) and passenger vehicles (cars, minibuses, etc.). Current procedures require repeated manual checks of drivers, passengers, and cargo, resulting in long transaction times, waiting lines, and queuing that cause delays for operators, travellers, and border authorities.”
AutoBorder will investigate whether innovative systems can safely and securely support a continuous checkpoint concept for streamlining and accelerating the border crossing process, without compromising security, privacy, or fundamental rights. At the core of the project’s concept and objectives is the development of a solution that ensures travellers remain in full control of their personal and identity data.
To address these challenges, AutoBorder will build and test a single unified open and extensible platform configurable and deployable at all maritime and land border crossing points and for all types of vehicles. The technical solution will be designed to be both retrofit for commercial fleets and adoptable by vehicle manufacturers for future production models. Integrating sensing technology and smart software with existing in-vehicle navigation and entertainment systems will enable identity data and other information required by border control authorities to be securely transmitted in advance of arrival, reducing bottlenecks and enabling faster, more seamless border crossings.
Objectives
The overall objective is to keep vehicles moving smoothly at an acceptable pace while still allowing border guards to intervene and stop any vehicle when necessary. AutoBorder’s five key objectives are to:
Enable frictionless, smart and secure drive-through borders
Enable accurate and reliable identification of travellers within vehicles
Analyse the ethical, fundamental rights, legal, and societal implications of the deployment of AutoBorder’s innovations
Evaluate the performance of the developed innovations under representative conditions in maritime and land Border Control Points, and ensure acceptability
Implement measures toward the rapid uptake of AutoBorder’s outcomes
Achieving this requires research into robust, trustworthy systems that are widely accepted by users and that contribute to evidence-based regulation and standardisation.
