Frequently Asked Questions
What is AutoBorder?
AutoBorder is an EU-funded research and innovation project developing a next-generation, drive-through border control system. It aims to make border control faster, safer, and more efficient by using secure digital identities, advanced biometrics, and in-vehicle technologies.
How will AutoBorder make border crossings easier?
AutoBorder allows travellers to pre-register using a secure mobile app and uses in-vehicle sensors to verify identity on the move. This reduces the need for passengers to leave vehicles and helps border authorities process travellers more efficiently.
Will travellers still need to show passports?
Yes. AutoBorder does not replace passports. Instead, it builds on existing travel documents using Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs) to support faster, more secure checks.
Is AutoBorder only for cars?
No. The system is being tested across three Pilot Use Cases:
Commercial trucks and freight vehicles (Eurotunnel)
Coaches and minibuses (Eurotunnel)
Private cars and people carriers (Romania–Moldova land border)
Does AutoBorder store personal data?
AutoBorder follows strict EU privacy, data protection, and ethics standards. Personal data is only used for border checks and is deleted when no longer needed. Privacy-enhancing technologies and “privacy by design” principles guide all development.
Will everyone have to use AutoBorder?
No. The project is exploring optional, fast-track processes. Travellers who do not wish to use AutoBorder can follow the traditional border control lanes.
How does AutoBorder keep data safe?
Security is ensured through:
End-to-end encryption
Secure in-vehicle and backend communication
Template protection for biometric data
Strict access control and “zero trust” architecture
Compliance with GDPR and national legislation
What technologies does AutoBorder use?
AutoBorder combines several innovations, including:
Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs)
In-vehicle biometrics
Passenger counting and behaviour analysis
Advanced risk assessment
Decision support tools for border guards
Will border guard authorities still be involved?
Absolutely. AutoBorder supports — not replaces — border guards. Officers receive real-time information via secure devices to help them make informed decisions.
When will AutoBorder be available for public use?
AutoBorder is a research and innovation project, running until 2028. The goal is to produce prototypes and guidelines for future large-scale deployment.
