Expected Results
AutoBorder is committed to creating a user-driven and agile process to facilitate a seamless, smart, and secure drive-through border system. The project integrates feedback from end users, including border authorities and travellers, to ensure that technical innovation aligns with operational realities and user needs.
Travellers will be able to pre-enrol remotely through a dedicated smartphone app, linking digital travel credentials (DTCs) to their identity before arrival. At the border, vehicles equipped with in-vehicle sensors, including visual and near-infrared, will automatically verify passengers using biometric modalities such as iris, contactless fingerprint, and palmprint. It is a two-fold process, consisting of the determination of the passengers’ numbers and their biometric authentication. This is supported by infotainment-based instructions to guide travellers during passage.
AutoBorder’s platform will connect seamlessly and securely with existing EU systems, such as EES, SIS II, and ETIAS, to integrate information and interoperate with established legacy systems as well as incorporate data from these acknowledged systems. It employs AI-driven risk assessment, liveness detection, and biometric template protection to ensure robust, GDPR-compliant verification. The system’s open architecture allows seamless integration with national infrastructures while maintaining strong cybersecurity standards.
Pilot use casesin France (Eurotunnel) and Romania (Romania/Moldova border) will validate the system under real-world conditions, assessing its performance, usability, and public acceptability to pave the way for future deployment across Europe.
