Law and Ethics

AutoBorder has a strong commitment to ensuring that the outcome of our project–and the way we conduct our research–are fully ethical and legal. Our goal is to develop solutions to real issues and potential threats, without compromising EU citizens’ and international travellers’ rights. As a concept, our solutions will be non-invasive for the traveller. In practice, our law and ethics work will ensure that all legal, ethical and societal aspects are taken into account early on in our research, so that the technical solutions developed are safe for all, and cannot be misused at any point.

To achieve this, AutoBorder has involved internal and external experts for independent checks and safety mechanisms.

What are the Laws?

AutoBorder’s team demands that the R&I work and potential future exploitation of results be fully in line with EU fundamental rights and regulations. Some of the laws and regulations we are carefully studying and applying to our research and the solutions we hope to deliver are:

• EU Charter

• EUROSUR

• The Schengen Border Code

• “Smart Borders” and interoperability regulations

• Fundamental rights and privacy, and data protection legislation like the GDPR

The Team

AutoBorder has a team of legal, ethical and security experts, some of whom are partners in the project and others are external, independent advisors.

Their objective is to guide the project teams and ensure that all technical developments, lab tests, collections of data on sites and demonstrations comply with all existing regulations.

Their contribution to the project will ensure that not only will the AutoBorder solutions respect legal, ethical, privacy and data protection requirements, but they will also equally be in accordance with societal expectations and will comply with the existing and proposed EU regulations on border control, ‘Smart Borders’ (EES), and AI act.
